Ship Security

So, I finally have some internet time to update my blog and google+. One of jobs I had this summer was security for large foreign ships, checking everyone one in and out. The ships have been cruise ships, fuel ships, and research vessels. Lots of different kind of folks through here.

Sail Boat Delivery

I recently had the opportunity to crew on a 700nm trip delivering a sail boat from Nome, AK to Sand Point, AK. I was a bit seasick for the first day and a half but soon got over it by the time some heavy weather with 40 knot winds came our way. We tucked into Nunivak Island for a day to wait for the weather to pass. We then had a nice northwest wind to carry us all the way to False Pass. I saw some black and white dolphins (see video) that hung around for 2 hours playing in the waves in front of the boat.

Abandoned Gold Dredge, Nome

Things have been busy here in Nome.  I see May is my last post.  One of the things we like to do when the weather permits is to take the buggy out into the country.  This time we stopped at an abandon gold dredge.  See more pictures at g+.

AMCC Forest

AMCC State Forest

Since Nome is very cold it is rare to see a tree taller than 3 feet.  I discovered the AMCC (Anvil Mountain Correctional Facility) State Forest while geocaching.  This biggest clump of trees in all of Nome!

End of School Dances

Jannelle

Bianca

This Summer I am in Nome with the Trowbridges.  I get to be part of things like Prom and Dances with my nieces   Jannelle is a natural when it comes to being in front of the camera; trying to get the perfect swirl with her green dress in the living room.  Contrarily, Bianca grows shy when the camera comes out (a bit like my self) and tries to ignore me instead.

The Topanga Lookout

A few weeks ago I managed one last hike for a while in the warm California weather.  I stopped at this really colorful graffiti area. The Concrete slab here is all the remains of the of Los Angeles Fire Department's Topanga Fire Lookout and has been a canvas for taggers, and other graffiti artists.  There was even art in progress by some teenagers as I came past here again on the way back.

Nome, AK Sunrise
Just spent some time with the Trowbridge family, doing the usual outdoor stuff we do.  I am headed home now and killing some time on my layover at the airport as usual. Back to sunny California tomorrow!
